The members of this division of the MTA deal with motor vehicles that are no longer financially viable to maintain or operate. As such they are often termed end of life vehicles (ELVs). These vehicles are mainly written off vehicles acquired from damaged vehicle auctions, although some are purchased directly from private individuals or businesses.
These members decontaminate the vehicle, then remove, catalogue and sell the marketable parts from these vehicles. What is marketable varies depending on the model of vehicle.
Once these parts have been removed, much of the remaining materials are sold off to be recycled, such as any metals, some plastics are recycled. Any materials that are uneconomic to recycle are responsibly disposed of.
All the members of the division are members of the national body, APRAA, an affiliated Trade Association of the MTAA.
APRAWA assists its members to operate in what is an increasingly regulated and complex trading environment. Legislative requirements and vehicle technology are becoming increasingly complex, requiring increased levels of training, equipment and increasing the management demands of operating a recycling business.
APRAWA is actively involved in providing training, OHS support, as well as participating and reviewing the criteria of programs such as the APRAA accreditation scheme and the MTA WA GreenStamp Environmental Program.
Did you know there is a specific Greenstamp criteria that has been customised for Automotive parts Recycling businesses? always look for the Greenstamp logo.
On the national level, APRAA have run national events every year, with WA hosting the biannual National Yard Tour, based out of Fremantle, in November 2009. This year's event was hosted by the VACC in Melbourne from the 8-10 July 2011. Click on the link at the top of the page for more info.
Such events provide Auto Recyclers the opportunity to network, upskill and broaden their knowledge base.
APRAWA Members - remember to log in the APRAWA members page from time to time via the members section of the website. Simply enter in your username and password in the silver box at the top of the page. If you can't remember your login details, contact the MTA via phone or email mtawa@mtawa.com.au
