Light Vehicle Technician
Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

This apprenticeship suits people with a passion for cars and good problem solving skills.  Light vehicle mechanics service and maintain cars from the general every day vehicles we use to get around to specialised performance cars.  It’s a career which offers many options including owning your own repair shop.

Heavy Vehicle Technician
Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology

Career opportunities: service manager or advisor, workshop foreman, technical officer, business owner, manager, trainer.

Heavy vehicle mechanics maintain, test, diagnose, and repair systems in vehicles such as trucks, large earth moving machinery, farm machinery and buses.  Some of the skills that heavy vehicle mechanics learn include repairing ignition systems, electronic transmission systems, cooling systems and exhaust systems. As your apprenticeship progresses you will be trained in the overhaul of engines and associated components these will include clutch assemblies, steering and braking systems along with transmissions both automatic and manual.

Vehicle Body Technician
Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology & Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology

Career opportunities: vehicle painter, panel beater, vehicle body builder, dismantler, glazer, accessory fitter, workshop manager, business owner, insurance assessor, trainer.

This career suits people with a passion for cars and an eye for detail.  Tasks in this role include but are not limited to; inspecting vehicles and determining required work, removing and replacing damaged panels and components, straightening and re-aligning chassis and body frames, welding, rust proofing and removing and replacing mechanical, electrical and safety components. Other tasks will include utilising information from manufacturers, preparing vehicle surfaces, mixing, matching and applying paint, including touch up work, signage and graphics.
