MTA WA CEO Stephen Moir, has written to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCI WA), expressing significant disappointment in their decision to hold and event in April showcasing Uber.  Mr Moir wrote as follows:

Dear Deidre

I am writing to express the MTA WA’s significant disappointment in CCIWA’s decision to host an event with Uber on the 5th of April, 2017.

As an organisation representing largely small business, I am surprised that the Chamber is promoting an organisation such as Uber who, have significantly damaged a large number of small businesses in West Australian taxi and small charter sector.

Uber have consistently shown a total disregard of the regulatory requirements for transport providers, not only in WA but in every jurisdiction in which they operate across the globe. Indeed there have been serious allegations internationally of Uber’s attempts to evade officials attempting to catch Uber driver’s violating local regulations.

Whilst I appreciate that all businesses should have an awareness of the sharing economy and market disruptors such as Uber and Airbnb, we as business representative organisations have a responsibility to showcase reputable and legitimate businesses. As an industry leader I believe that CCI WA should only promote organisations that operate a legitimate business that meet community expectations and comply with the regulatory regime ensuring as level a playing field as possible.

I look forward to your response to this issue.

Yours sincerely

Stephen Moir

Group Chief Executive Officer
