“The assessment was carried out by a representative of St John which was not intrusive and finished up with a meeting which only took a small part of my time,” he said.
“Even though we do carry most of the first aid equipment, the assessment did highlight some areas for improvement of which we have acted on and we will also put more staff though first aid training.
“The wellbeing and safety of our staff is of the utmost importance and I would encourage any business to have a thorough assessment of their workplace as you never know what lies around the corner,” said Loris.
First aid skills are important for WA businesses to endorse with their employees as accidents can occur within the workplace environment.
A case in point took place last year when Abigail Adamson, an employee of the camping and outdoor gear retailer Kathmandu, was faced with the collapse of a man, Bill Tucker, on the street outside the store on Hay Street in Perth.
Kathmandu had only weeks earlier put Abigail through first aid training and because of the skills she obtained, she felt confident to take charge of the scene and perform CPR on Bill, who had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Fortunately, he has since made a full recovery.
“It was definitely a full-on experience but it just goes to show that anyone can do first aid, it’s not difficult,” she said.
