Green Stamp helps automotive businesses to reduce their impact on the WA environment. The program has been developed by the MTA WA specifically for the motor industry and receives funding from the Waste Authority. Are you ready to become one of nature's preferred automotive repairers?
What is Green Stamp?
Green Stamp is an environmental management initiative developed by the Motor Trade Association of Western Australia (MTA WA) in conjunction with the Waste Authority, funded through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account.
The program assists small to medium sized businesses within the automotive trades to incorporate processes and practices that allow them to dispose of their wastes in an environmentally sensitive manner. It also aims to assist businesses in the industry to become resource efficient and more environmentally sustainable.
The program focuses on several key areas:
- Storage practices associated with chemicals and other hazardous substances.
- Pre-treatment of wastewater from the workshop prior to approved disposal.
- Spill management to prevent pollution of ground and stormwater systems.
- Correct disposal of waste products.
- Air quality management.
- Energy and resource conservation.
- The development and implementation of environment management plans.
Through Green Stamp consultation, your business is able to identify and then manage environmental impacts generated by your day to day business activities.
Why carry out a formal audit?
An audit allows your business to be benchmarked to industry best practice, with Green Stamp accreditation and Green Stamp Advantage accreditation providing a framework.
The audit is structured to assist automotive businesses in:
- Understanding environmental and waste management processes.
- Minimising the use of energy and resources where possible.
- Sustainably storing, using and tracking resources that are used to minimise any impacts on the land, sea and air outside of the controlled workshop environment.
Why should my business be environmentally accredited?
An increasing concern for the environment by business owners and consumers in recent years has seen a general shift in attitude and practice in the automotive repair industry. A growing number of businesses are operating their processes or managing particular wastes to a standard never previously achieved in Australia.
The industry is still often perceived as being significant polluters due to the obvious environmental impact many traditional practices continue to have. One of the Green Stamp objectives is to start changing that belief by showing consumers and stakeholders that many workshops are including environmental considerations in their operations.
The Green Stamp Accreditation is an excellent marketing tool for automotive businesses to prove to their customers their commitment to good environmental management. It aims to educate the consumer and appeal to their environmental conscience, encouraging them to utilise the services of a Green Stamp Accredited business.
Green Stamp provides accredited workshops with a competitive market advantage by positioning their business as clean, green and environmentally conscious.
Once Accreditation is achieved, a range of marketing material is available for you to promote your Green Stamp accredited business.
The Green Stamp program is designed to provide recognition to businesses who continuously strive to incorporate environmentally friendly business practices, endeavouring to achieve the best possible outcome for the environment. There are two levels of Green Stamp accreditation, that indicate the level of environmental improvement steps a business has taken.
What are your environmental obligations?
All businesses in the WA automotive trade industry are required to abide by a certain number of laws, regulations, policies and guidelines in order to comply with legislative environmental obligations.
Governments at all levels are actively responding to a rapidly growing environmental awareness by establishing and enforcing stringent levels of environmental legislative compliance for all individuals, and for all industry.
In some cases, breaking these laws is an offence that could carry serious penalties and/or imprisonment.
Fines can range from an infringement notice up to a $1,000,000 penalty plus environmental clean-up costs and/or imprisonment.
Green Stamp Accreditation
Businesses must demonstrate that they hold all relevant permits and licences and are operating in a manner that indicates they have adopted a minimum number of sound environmental management practices into their daily operations. This could include the recycling of particular wastes, the use of less toxic chemicals or the installation of energy saving devices.
Green Stamp Advantage Accreditation
Businesses demonstrate that they are continuously working on improving environmental outcomes and endeavouring to achieve the best possible outcome for the environment. This level requires businesses to develop and implement an Environmental Management Plan to help monitor and review their current practices and set objectives or targets for further improvement.
