MTA provide two courses:

 These courses are run by MTA WA for both MTA WA members and non-members who are interested in a rewarding career in motor vehicle sales and yard management

What Course do I Need?

Yard Manager/Dealer

The Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA) requires that a person/s or company engaged in the business of buying or selling of certain vehicles must hold a Dealer's licence.

A Yard Manager is someone employed or engaged by a dealer to manage or supervise the dealer's business of buying and/or selling vehicles.

This legal requirement also includes someone:

  • who acts as an agent for others in buying or selling vehicles;
  • whose business includes buying vehicles for wrecking;
  • who finances the buying of vehicles;
  • who engages in the business of auctioning vehicles;
  • who is a hire car operator; and
  • who operates a car market. (A car market allows private individuals - that is people other than the market operators - to sell their vehicles by private treaty.)

Therefore, anyone who engages in any of these activities must apply for a licence.

Still unsure if you need a license?

Please Note: If you need a Yard Manager/Dealer license and you don't already have a Salesperson License it is highly recommended you attend the Sales person course first before attempting the Yard Manager workshop.

Salesperson

A Salesperson is someone who is employed or engaged by or on behalf of a dealer in the buying or selling of motor vehicles other than in the capacity of Yard Manager.

The following activities constitute the act of buying or selling vehicles:

  1. Writing up purchase contracts.
  2. Taking a customer for a demonstration drive.
  3. Showing vehicles to a customer.
  4. Surveying or discussing customer needs.
The following activities do not constitute the act of buying or selling vehicles:
  1. Writing up finance (not purchase) contracts.
  2. Selling after-care products.
  3. Arranging insurance.
  4. Recording customer's details for the purpose of introducing the customer to a licensed salesperson.
