Vehicle Compliance Plates to be Phased Out

From 1 July 2021, vehicle compliance plates will be phased out with full removal on new vehicles by 1 July 2022.

Background

The Commonwealth Government is replacing the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 with the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 and Road Vehicle Standards Rules 2019 (RVS legislation).

The RVS legislation will deliver an updated and modernised system for regulating the provision of road vehicles to the Australian market.

Process

Dealerships currently refer to a vehicle’s compliance plate for various pieces of key information when licensing a new vehicle. Compliance information for vehicles manufactured without a compliance plate will be found on a new website provided by the Commonwealth.

Compliance plates on new vehicles will be phased out between 01 July 2021 and 01 July 2022.

Dealers will find compliance information for vehicles will change depending on the build date of the vehicle.
