MEET MTA WA PRESIDENT, ROBYN COOK

DRIVEN, COMMUNITY-MINDED AND RESILIENT

When Robyn Cook and her family arrived in Mandurah nearly three decades ago, they brought little more than determination, a Nissan Bluebird station wagon, and a vision for a business of their own. Now, as she leads the Motor Trade Association of Western Australia (MTA WA) for 2025–26, that same spirit continues to define her leadership.

Robyn Cook - MTA WA President

Her journey began in 1997 with the establishment of Peel Tyre Service, alongside her husband and their two small children.

With no employees in the first twelve months, Robyn quickly immersed herself in the tyre industry, learning every aspect of the business. Through strategic focus and determination, she laid the groundwork for what is today a thriving enterprise — one defined by resilience, risk-taking, innovation, and community. Robyn has consistently supported her local community and advocated for the broader automotive industry, even making history as the first woman in Australia to serve on the national committee of the Australian Tyre Dealers and Retread Association (ATDRA).

Robyn said:

“Community is my driver; service is my passion, and safety is my mission.”

These words capture not only Robyn’s approach to business but her philosophy on leadership. Over 28 years, she has seen the automotive sector evolve from combustion engines to improvements in electric and hybrid technologies, and from having no computers to digital diagnostics and online learning.

Robyn has built a reputation for integrity, perseverance, and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing small businesses.

As MTA WA President, Robyn describes her appointment as both a privilege and a responsibility. Her focus is clear: to strengthen the Association’s foundations, expand opportunities for members, and champion the next generation of automotive professionals.

“I’ve worked extremely hard for this role, and I want to use it to inspire others — women and men alike. Small  independent workshops like mine really can make a difference.”

A Journey Built on Determination

In 1997, Robyn and her family left Mildura, Victoria, to start afresh in Mandurah, WA. They sold their home, packed up their young family and poured everything into the dream of opening a small independent tyre business.

“For the first twelve months, my husband changed every tyre while I ran the office and phones with two small children under two. Those were the hardest days of my life, but they built the foundation of everything that followed.”

Nearly three decades on, Peel Tyre Service has become a Mandurah institution built on a reputation for community service, customer care, and safety. Robyn’s commitment to “old-fashioned service and a can-do attitude” has seen the business recognised with numerous local, state, and national awards, including awards for Robyn herself as a woman in business.

Robyn has been on several automotive committees and is a strong advocate for training, workforce development, and championing women in automotive.  Now in her eighth year on the MTA WA Board of Directors, Robyn has also served as Treasurer for three years.

In Her Own Words

What does being appointed President mean to you personally and professionally?
It's an incredible privilege and a proud moment having spent 28 years in this industry. Personally, it’s a sense of achievement. Over the years, I’ve seen the automotive industry evolve from working mainly on combustion engines to embracing electric and hybrid technologies, alongside the transition to digital diagnostics. Professionally, it’s an opportunity to continue advocating for members and to help guide the MTA WA’s strategic direction, particularly around expanding training opportunities.

What are your key priorities for the year ahead?
Working with our CEO and the Board to ensure stability and growth is a top priority. I’m also passionate about progressing plans for a new training facility, adding new courses, and continuing to grow our membership base. Encouraging women in automotive and increasing regional engagement are also high on my agenda.

What lessons from running your own business will you bring to this role?
Running a successful business takes vision, consistency, and communication. I’ve learnt to listen, to follow through, and to foster a strong, positive culture. I’ll bring that same strategic mindset to the MTA WA — one that focuses on innovation, growth, and supporting members at every level, from small workshops to large dealer groups and beyond.

What do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities for the industry right now?
Finding and keeping skilled staff remains a key challenge, especially as many long-term business owners approach retirement. But there are enormous opportunities in training, technology, and innovation, including AI, online learning and new types of vehicles. It’s an exciting time for the next generation of technicians and business owners.

You’ve long championed women and young people in automotive — why is this so important to you?
When I started, I wasn’t taken seriously; people would say, “What would a woman know about tyres?” Now, I’m proud to see more women than ever choosing careers in automotive. Knowing that the number of female apprentices across the MTA WA’s training programs continues to grow is a real sign of progress and a reminder of how important it is to keep that momentum going.

“Who would have thought I could be President of the MTA WA? Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.”

What inspires you day to day?
Happy customers and happy staff. Living in the Peel region, I’m surrounded by a supportive community.

My Ladies Happy Hour service is a seven-point tyre and car check that raises tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research. I get the opportunity to meet many women who inspire me every day with their stories of strength and resilience.

How do you like to unwind?
I love driving my 1928 Whippet, going for motorbike rides, walking trails, travelling and catching live music when I can. I don’t get much time away from work, but that’s because I genuinely love what I do.

Message to Members

“It’s a privilege to lead the Association at a time of transformation. I look forward to shaping a stronger future together and working collaboratively with all members to ensure the MTA WA continues to represent, support, and advocate for our industry.”
