Training FAQs

Both GTOs (Group Training Organisations) and RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) play important roles in Australia’s apprenticeship and training system, but they have different functions.

GTO – Group Training Organisation

A GTO specialises in employing apprentices and trainees on behalf of host employers. As a GTO, we:

• Employ apprentices and trainees, handling all employment responsibilities
• Match successful applicants with suitable host employers
• Provide expert support, mentoring, and compliance management throughout the apprenticeship
• Ensure workplace safety and legal compliance
• Manage all HR, payroll, and industrial relations matters

GTOs are ideal if you want to access apprenticeship talent without the direct employment commitment.

RTO – Registered Training Organisation

An RTO is a registered provider of vocational training and qualifications. As an RTO, we:

• Deliver accredited training courses and qualifications (like Certificate II and III)
• Offer flexible delivery methods to suit different learning styles and workplace needs
• Provide both classroom-based and workplace-based training
• Deliver tailored training programs aligned to industry standards
• Ensure quality assurance and compliance with training standards

RTOs focus on the training and qualification side of apprenticeships and vocational education.

How they work together

MTA WA operate as both a GTO and RTO. This means we can employ apprentices and deliver their training, providing a complete, integrated apprenticeship experience.

Students can complete training in the following courses at the MTA WA Training:

• Light Vehicle (Certificate II & Certificate III)
• Auto Electrical (Certificate II & Certificate III)
• Tyre Fitting (Skills Assessment’s Non accredited & Certificate II)
• Automotive Air Conditioning (Certificate II)
• Battery Hybrid Electric Vehicle (Short courses & Certificate III)
• Accessory Fitting (non accredited course for obtaining repairers licence in relevant class)
• Sales Person Licensing Course (non accredited course for obtaining licence)
• Yard Manager/Dealer Licensing Course (non accredited course for obtaining licence)

Yes, MTA WA Training Inc. (RTO 0627) is a Registered Training Organisation. If you are employed as an apprentice within a business then you are able to undertake your nationally recognised training at MTA WA Training.

We deliver your off-the-job training while your employer delivers on-the-job training.

Most training blocks run for three days and apprentices attend roughly 5 blocks of training per year. Training consists of a range of theoretical and practical tasks followed by written knowledge testing.

Apprenticeship training contracts are always signed for a minimum of 4 years, even if you have prior experience or a previous training contract. However, this expiry date isn’t necessarily your completion date. As soon as all units of competency within the qualification are complete, we issue a Notice of Completion form to your employer, and you can nominate a new training contract end date (your completion date).

Course Delivery & Benefits:

• The program is structured over 3 years providing the employer with more access to their apprentices when they are needed most.
• A set number of units will be completed each year, ensuring clarity on the progress of the apprenticeship for both the employer and apprentice.
• A set number of days for classroom training will be allocated to each apprentice at the beginning of each year. This consists of approximately 4 blocks of training per year (with a minimum 2 days to a maximum of 4 days per block, in any one year).
• A clear focus is made on reducing the impact of classroom training on the employer and minimise workplace disruptions.
• A minimum number of trainer/assessor contact hours, for workplace visits per apprentice, will be undertaken each year to assist with transferring learning into the workplace.

RTO Provider No. 0627

MTA WA Training has a rolling intake, meaning we accept new learners all year round. When you sign your training contract, nominate MTA WA Training (RTO 0627) as your preferred training provider. We’ll contact you to begin your enrolment as soon as we receive your contract.

Both the apprentice and the employer need to sign a training contract. This is done through an Apprenticeship Connect Provider (ACP) such as MEGT, Apprenticeship Support Australia, or BUSY At Work – The Apprenticeship Community.

When a representative visits to sign up the contract, let them know you wish to nominate MTA WA Training (RTO 0627) as your preferred training provider.

Yes. MTA WA Training offers a range of upskilling courses you can complete after your apprenticeship to build on your skills. You may also wish to dual trade into a second Certificate III.
