Sparking debate: High Court unplugs Victoria’s electric vehicle tax

It was announced on 18 October 2023 that the High Court has ruled against the Victorian electric vehicle tax, deeming the initiative ‘constitutionally invalid’.

The decision has reignited discussions on how motorists are taxed nationwide, bringing into question whether a national road user charge for all motorists, regardless of how their vehicle is powered, should be introduced in place of the current fuel excise.
