2026 Workplace Exposure Limits Decision Supports WA Automotive Industry

The Motor Trade Association of Western Australia (MTA WA) has welcomed the decision by Work Health and Safety (WHS) Ministers to retain existing Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) workplace exposure limits, providing certainty for automotive businesses.
The move follows concerns about the practicality, cost, and evidence behind proposed changes in Safe Work Australia’s review. A key issue was the proposed NO₂ limit of 0.2 ppm, seen as difficult to achieve in workshop environments.
MTA WA highlighted limited evidence of additional health benefits, low-confidence modelling, and compliance costs exceeding $2.7 billion nationally. The outcome supports a practical, evidence-based approach as new Workplace Exposure Limits take effect from 1 December 2026.
